Job Description

Virginia Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Director of Global Engagement. This position is a full-time, 12-month staff position that reports to the Executive Director of Student Support Services. The Director of Global Engagement develops and communicates the strategic vision for expanding study away opportunities. The Director oversees both semester and short-term study away experiences and international students coming into the University. The Director of Global Engagement is the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and oversees the immigration policy and compliance for all F-1 international students as well as J1 visas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes a strategic vision of study away to include both study abroad exchange programs and short term study away programs.
  • Manages semester study abroad programs, including Virginia Wesleyan University’s Global Scholars Program, study abroad exchange partnerships, and study abroad providers, overseeing program development, marketing, logistics, and budgeting.
  • Develops Global Engagement policies and procedures and collaborates with campus faculty and staff to develop short term study away courses.
  • Serves as a primary contact person with the LUJ/VWU Global Campus in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Administers the F-1 international student immigration process and maintains F-1 international student records. Instruction and Advising.
  • Provides individualized advising to students on their study away options, preparation, and re-acclimation.
  • Provides individualized advising to international students on immigration policies assessment, course selection, and cultural acclimation, and provides support while students are enrolled at VWU.
  • Develops and implements pre-departure study away workshops, materials, and instruction.
  • Conducts annual Study Away assessment, including assessing Student Learning Outcomes, produces annual Study Away report, and participates in the collection and analysis of data and evidence for reporting to SACSCOC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience in higher education and global engagement.
  • Experience with study away administration and programs.
  • Experience instructing and advising college students.
  • Experience with F-1 visa regulations, J1 visas and the SEVIS system.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students, excellent oral and written communication skills, and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • College-level teaching experience preferred.
