Job Description
The Assistant Director of Global Education is responsible for coordinating study abroad programs and managing inbound international programs. They will advise students in choosing an appropriate study abroad program, provide support services to students studying abroad, and deliver programming and materials to enrich our students’; global learning experiences. The Assistant Director will work with the Director of Global Study and Experience to integrate diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice (DEIJ) throughout all study abroad/international education programs and will work in collaboration with Global Education staff to design and implement innovative study abroad and international education programs that support the mission of the college, the Saint Mary’s strategic plan, and curriculum. They will work in collaboration with Global Education staff to implement summer and semester in-bound international education programs. Supervises some student workers and study abroad peer advisors.
Job Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinate study abroad programs and provide support services to students before, during, and after studying abroad.
  • Manage and implement inbound international programs.
  • Design new study abroad and inbound international education programs aligned with the strategic plan and mission of the institution while maintaining a focus on gender, social justice, and DEIJ.
  • Serve as a DSO and ARO and promote the exchange visitor program.
  • Promote Saint Mary’s study abroad and international programs.
  • Offer study abroad scholarship advising.
  • Oversee the study abroad peer advisor program.
  • Manage study abroad database.
  • Assist the Director to continue the strengthening of SMC’s study abroad and inbound international programs.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Recruit inbound exchange/visiting students.
  • Help students choose an appropriate study abroad program, consistent with their academic requirements and eligibility for such programs.
  • Develop and implement dynamic ways to promote global education among the Saint Mary’s student body.
  • Offer pre-departure and re-entry sessions for study abroad students.
  • Advise students on available scholarships for study abroad.
  • Coordinate study abroad programs, including.
    • Program and academic advising for individual programs.
    • Recruitment for individual programs (conducting information sessions; recommending enrollment criteria; selecting applicants; supervising returnees).
    • Communicating with consortium partners.
    • Offering program course information.
    • Drafting annual budgets.
    • Serving as primary contact with on-site staff.
    • Providing program-specific orientation.
    • Assisting visa applications.
    • Serving on the crisis management team.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in global studies, higher education administration, or related field.
  • Two years professional work experience in international education, student affairs, multicultural and international student services, or related field.
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards for education abroad.
  • Personal international study/work/life experience.
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident to gain designation by the Department of Homeland Security as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  • Ability to work independently, excellent communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and organizational skills, computer proficiency, detail-orientation, and capacity for multi­tasking.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and functioning as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of methods, theories, and best-practices in Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Justice, and demonstrable experience working on DEIJ initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Oral fluency in one or more foreign languages.
  • Innovative and strategic thinker who is passionate about designing new systems, processes, and programs.
  • Experience advising F-1 and J-1 visa holders and maintaining SEVIS records.
